Yngwie J. Malmsteen: Relentless
03/12/10 || Lord K Philipson
Sweden’s only rockstar is fucken back and he’s… eh… relentless? I know, I know, lame attempt at a joke. Thing is this, no matter what Yngwie releases, no matter how fucken awful it is and how incredibly weak his productions always are – it’s YNGWIE! You can’t fail if you are Yngwie. There’s like a universal law to this whole thing. If you are Yngwie you are untouchable. Even by Catholic priests. That says it all.
This fucken guy has released the same album over and over for the better part of a thousand years and still to this day he remains one of my fave musicians. I blame that solely on the fantastic debut piece of vinyl that saw the light of guitar shredding day already back in fucken 19…54? Simply put: Yngwie is King and I would have his ugly children if he asked me to and I grew a vagina and ovaries. As long as he doesn’t wanna French kiss me. Or something. And if I ever manage to get this guy to do a guest solo or 500 on any of my own future songs I will officially consider my work here on Earth done. That would be it. Mission would be accomplished. I would stab myself to death with a Stratocaster as the grand finale. Perhaps.
“Relentless” is this guy’s best offering in tons of years. I’d even say it’s ranking up just after “Odyssey”. You never saw that coming. For some reason he’s managed to cook up a shitload of great songs (with the obligatory shit production ofcourse) and he sounds fucken inspired once again. Inspired in creating tunes that is, not inspired as in eating more donuts and grow more fat. I applaud him.
Yeah, we have heard every fucken solo before, and we have also heard all these tunes under different names in the past – but what Yngwie’s done this time around is to fire up some incredibly catchy shit, sometimes almost on par with the best tracks from his earlier recordings, and that says alot. As always, though, there are a few weaker bits included – but even those pass for at least decent and is just customary to Yngwie’s way of doing things.
You know how this fucko works and you know what he sounds like, so let me just state that “Relentless” is a killer fucken album by a guy that most people have counted out a long time ago. As mentioned, you didn’t see this coming. But fucken I did. How come? Well, easy:
It’s fucken Yngwie. The Viking. The Swede. The Rockstar. The Hero.
